Question 93: The Cổ-Pháp of Caodaism

Cổ Pháp has two meanings:

  • a. Cổ Pháp refers to the ancient laws.
  • b. Cổ Pháp refers to the ancient secret practices of the religions.

Here, we must understand it in a composite sense: the ancient secret practices of prior religions are employed to symbolize the True Law of today, while faithfully observing the regulations according to the Three Teachings (Tam giáo).

According to the Tân Luật and the Pháp Chánh Truyền, there are three Cổ Pháp of the Three Teachings: Bình Bát Vu, Cây Phất Chủ, and Bộ Xuân Thu.

  •  Bát Vu – the alms bowl carried by monks and nuns for begging.

The Bát Vu symbolizes the ancient law of the Buddhist path (Phật đạo).

  •  Phất Chủ – also called the phất trần, a broom used by the Immortals to sweep away worldly dust.

The Phất Chủ symbolizes the ancient law of the Taoist path (Tiên đạo).

  •  Sách Xuân Thu – the historical text compiled by Confucius, containing the essence of Confucian teachings.

The Sách Xuân Thu symbolizes the ancient law of the Confucian or Saintly path (Thánh đạo).

Caodaism employs these images of the Three Teachings’ Cổ Pháp to highlight the principle: “Tam giáo qui nguyên”

  •  The Cổ Pháp of the Three Teachings — Bình Bát Vu, Cây Phất Chủ, and Bộ Xuân Thu:

Are often referred to collectively as Cổ Pháp Hộ Pháp (the Protecting Ancient Laws).

  •  The Cổ Pháp of Thượng Phẩm is the Long Tu Phiến.

  •  The Cổ Pháp of Thượng Sanh are the Thư Hùng Kiếm and the Phất Chủ.

  •  The Cổ Pháp of the Giáo Tông combines the Cổ Pháp of Thượng Phẩm and Cổ Pháp of Thượng Sanh.
