Question 98: Why is it that some people, both untalented and cruel, live in wealth and luxury?

Consider a beggar, blind and crippled, dragging his limbs along the street. If we view all things through the lens of Karma, we may see that unfortunate soul in another light.

We may look to the past and imagine this person in another role, clothed differently, living in a different era. We can envision that unfortunate soul in the visage of a cruel, inhumane feudal lord.

Possessing immeasurable wealth, he remained cold and indifferent toward the suffering and poverty of those who toiled their entire lives to enrich him. Arrogantly, he imprisoned and punished without restraint, showing no mercy toward those who opposed or displeased him.

Such was the image of this soul in a previous lifetime. Conversely, there are those who are untalented and cruel, yet live in opulence.

We may infer that, though unkind now, they performed abundant acts of charity in a past life. Yet if in this life their wealth arises from corruption, exploitation, or drug trafficking, then in the next life they must face karmic consequences accordingly.

However, we must not habitually compare ourselves to others on a horizontal plane within time and space. For, according to the doctrine of Reincarnation, a true understanding of life is a vertical one — across lifetimes.

Comparing ourselves with others is futile, for our progress is measured not against others, but in relation to ourselves and to God. As long as one lives in this world, one must encounter circumstances brought by karmic retribution.

When adversity inevitably arises, we may accept it with patience, courage, and even joy; in doing so, we lay the foundation for future glory and success.

Most of us, when faced with adversity or injustice, tend to feel wronged and innocent, rather than considering that perhaps we once caused similar suffering to others.

Perhaps this arises from the natural pride in every person, but there is another reason, forgetfulness: A compassionate law of nature allows us to forget the mistaken and sinful past of our previous lifetimes.
